Look at the two numbers side by side. The "nominal" figure is the number you'd see on a statement. The "today's money" figure accounts for inflation eating into what it actually buys over the years you're invested. Both are true at once. Calculators that only show the big nominal number are flattering you.

Where to Actually Invest

The calculator assumes tax is paid once at withdrawal. That's only true if your account qualifies as a Lithuanian investment account (investicinฤ— sฤ…skaita). Not every provider supports it โ€” and one major name doesn't at all.

Revolut

Great for banking โ€” wrong choice for investing here

Not recommended
Revolut Securities Europe UAB does not offer the Lithuanian investment account regime. An investing account with Revolut is an ordinary broker account โ€” the compounding advantage modelled in the calculator above simply doesn't apply. We recommend Revolut throughout this site for banking, where it's genuinely the best first account for a new arrival. For investing in Lithuania, it isn't.

Key features

  • Still a genuinely good first bank account for a new arrival

The real decision: convenience or cost

Lithuanian banks handle the tax reporting for you โ€” the declaration is close to automatic, and if you're under 25 SEB costs nothing. Foreign brokers are meaningfully cheaper with far more choice, but you become responsible for tracking every deposit and withdrawal and getting the declaration right. Neither is wrong. Pick the trade you'd rather make, and if you go foreign, start the spreadsheet on day one.

How the Inputs Work

Expected annual return

The single most influential assumption, and the one nobody can know. Long-run global equity averages are often quoted around 7% nominal, but actual outcomes vary enormously and include long periods of loss. Try 4% and 9% to see how wide the range gets โ€” that spread is the honest picture.

Annual fee

Charged on your whole balance every year, so it compounds against you. Broad index ETFs commonly sit around 0.05โ€“0.25%; actively managed funds are frequently ten times that. Try switching the default 0.20% fee to 1.5% and watch how much the "Lost to fees" figure changes over 20 years.

Inflation

Doesn't change your balance, changes what it buys. The "today's money" figure is the one to plan around.

Contribution increases

If you raise contributions as your salary grows โ€” even a few percent a year โ€” the effect over decades is substantial, because each increase compounds for longer than the last.

Tax on gains

Set to 15%, the Lithuanian rate for an investment account. Crucially, this is applied once at withdrawal, not annually โ€” which is exactly what the investment account regime allows. See our investing guide for how that works and which brokers support it.

Why the tax timing matters so much

This calculator taxes gains once, at the end. That's only accurate if you're using a Lithuanian investment account (investicinฤ— sฤ…skaita), where gains compound untaxed until you withdraw. In an ordinary account, realising gains along the way means paying tax as you go and losing the compounding on it. Revolut does not support the investment account regime โ€” worth knowing before you pick a broker. Full detail โ†’

What This Calculator Doesn't Do

Understand the tax side first

The investment account regime is what makes the 'tax once at the end' assumption valid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What return should I assume?

There's no correct answer. Long-run global equity averages are often cited near 7% nominal, but your actual outcome depends on what markets do and when. Run 4% and 9% as well โ€” the gap between them is the real uncertainty.

Why is the "today's money" figure so much lower?

Because inflation erodes purchasing power. At 2.5% over 20 years, prices roughly rise by 64%. The nominal figure is real money, but it buys less than the same number does today.

Is 15% the right tax rate for me?

It's the Lithuanian rate for investment account gains, applied when you withdraw more than you contributed. Different rules apply outside that regime, and to dividends. See our investing guide.

Does this work for pension contributions?

Not accurately. Pillar II and III pensions have their own contribution rules and tax treatment. Use this for brokerage investing.

What fee should I put in?

Check your fund's ongoing charges figure and add any platform fee. Broad index ETFs are often 0.05โ€“0.25%. If you don't know, find out โ€” it compounds.

Should I invest a lump sum or monthly?

Set the initial investment and monthly contribution to compare. Historically lump sums have often come out ahead simply because money is invested for longer, but regular investing suits most people's cash flow and reduces the risk of committing everything at a peak.
